First defeat: Girondins Bordeaux "“ CFR 1907 Cluj 1-0 (0-0)

The match had a balanced start, with the two teams searching for spaces in the opposing defence. The French respected their status of home team and appeared to be more active, but the first important opportunity came only in the 19th minute, when Gourcuff’s shot, 25 meters away, just missed Stăncioiu’s goal. Our team’s reply came in the 27th minute, when Gabriel Mureşan’s header went inches away from the post. Moreover, Culio’s strike, from the box, in the 36th minute, was deflected by Rame. Until the break, Bordeaux appeared to be more interested in building attacks, but Chalme was denied in the 40th and 42nd minutes by our keeper. CFR 1907 Cluj successfully managed to block the French forcing in the first half.

In the second half, Bordeaux returned to the pitch more determined and their persistence paid off in the 54th minute, when, after a misunderstanding with Stăncioiu, Cadu failed to hit the ball correctly and sent it into his own goal. 1-0 and CFR 1907 Cluj appeared not to be themselves in this match. In the 63rd minute, the same Cadu made another mistake in the box, but our keeper saved, deflecting for a corner kick. The French kept on attacking and, in the 75th and 76th minutes, Wendel’s attempts were saved by Stăncioiu. The railroaders woke up in the 77th minute, but Y. Kone’s shot was too weak from 10 meters. The match end found our team a man short, Trică being sent off after his second yellow card for a dive. CFR 1907 Cluj suffered their first defeat with Maurizio Trombetta on the bench, after a fixture in which our team’s less successful game play was doubled by bad luck.
